Communion Bread Recipes
All three of these recipes have been tested. Feel free to use whichever you prefer. Please ensure that your whole wheat flour is very fresh, as old flour drastically affects the taste of the bread. Each Sunday, approximately 300 pieces are required.
This is the recipe that Grace has been using for years.
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 cup white flour
1 tsp salt
4 tsp white sugar
1 Tbsp baking powder
2 Tbsp butter or shortening
¾ cup lukewarm water
Combine dry ingredients. Cut fat into dry mixture. Add water gradually until mixture forms a sticky ball. Knead briefly. Divide into 4 pieces; roll each into a circle about ¼” thick. Score into squares. Place on parchment-lined or lightly greased cookie sheet and bake at 350F for 13 to 15 minutes. Cool. Wrap in plastic wrap, then place in Ziploc bags.
Slightly sweeter than the regular recipe, lovely golden brown.
1 ½ cups whole wheat flour
1 ½ cups white flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 cup water
¼ cup honey
3 Tbsp oil
Sift flours together with baking soda and salt. Add water, honey and oil. Knead until smooth. Roll ¼” thick. Brush with a little more oil, score into squares. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet at 375 degrees F for 10 to 12 minutes. Cool 5 minutes, then while warm place in Ziploc bags and seal.
Dark brown and rich, tastes like a bran muffin!
1 ½ cups whole wheat flour
½ cup white flour
¼ tsp salt
¾ tsp baking soda
2 tsp vegetable oil
¾ cup cold water
2 Tbsp molasses
1 Tbsp honey
Combine dry ingredients in bowl. Add oil and mix well. Add remaining ingredients. Knead several minutes, adding flour as necessary. Divide into 3 equal parts, roll each ¼” thick. Score into squares. Bake at 350F for 10 to 12 minutes on an ungreased baking sheet. Cool on a wire rack.
